Recommended Supplements

9 MONTHS THAT COUNT FOREVER

These are the supplements I took on my personal pregnancy journey. I have no affiliation or parternship with these brands. They're simply the ones I decided to take based on their content and after my own market research.

Prenatal Multivitamin Supplement

Most pregnancy multivitamins out there hit the required quantities of the most important micronutrients during pregnancy.

So my search was about two specific micronutrients. I was looking for one that specifically contained:

1) Methylated folate, a form that is immediately usable by the body. It may be especially helpful for people with genetic variants that slow the conversion of folic acid, and emerging evidence suggests it could be even more effective at preventing
malformations than traditional folic acid.

2) Choline, one the key nutrients I talk about in the book, to help me reach (and sometimes exceed) my daily choline goal.

So the supplement that hit the mark for me was the Women's Prenatal Multivitamin by FullWell. Each serving contains 1,360 mcg of methylated folate and 300mg of choline.

The only downside is that one serving is 8 capsules (yes, eight!), which was not easy to swallow during the first trimester with pregnancy nausea.

Omega-3 Supplement

To get reach my daily DHA goals, I looked for supplements that contained at least 500 mg of DHA per serving. Make sure the amount is not of EPA+DHA, but of DHA alone, since many supplements will contain more EPA than DHA and hence may not give you enough DHA.

The supplement I found was the Super Omega-3 by Life Extension. It contains 500 mg of DHA per 2-capsule serving.

I also alternated with a liquid form (when I was sick of taking too many capsules each day), called Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Liquid.

I also want to mention that I used ConsumerLab to make an informed decision about these supplements. Both DHA products I selected were tested and found to be low in oxidation, free of heavy metal contamination, and verified to contain the labeled amount of DHA.

ConsumerLab is a totally independent, third-party testing laboratory that evaluates supplements for quality and safety. They test for factors such as total oxidation and heavy metals, and they independently verify ingredient levels.

If it’s within your budget, I highly recommend becoming a member. ConsumerLab regularly updates its reviews and continually tests new supplements on the market. I used their fish oil report to evaluate these products for quality and potential toxicity. (you need to be a paid member to get the full reports)

PS: I have no affiliation or partnership with ConsumerLab, it's just a ressource I found very useful during my own pregnancy and beyond.
